Hi Igi,
Imagine you are floating on the freezing Arctic sea....and you can see ice berg floating.
Those iceberg are frozen water right? Seawater wont freeze that fast its because of its high salt content. This is exactly the same way when they make blocks of ice on a bath of glycol water solution.
That is how glycol system works, we cool the water to certain degrees below zero and to prevent it from freezing we mix it with glycol solution, sometimes they call it brine solution...Just like Louie just mentioned technicians must be aware of the proper amount of mixture...if you put more glycol you can get a lower freezing point but it has limit that if you put too much it will just simply crystalize just like adding too much sugar on a cup of coffee it simply settles at the bottom and wont dissolve anymore.
Common usage of glycol are for ice making, can you see the brown thing at the bottom a blocked of ice? That is dirt, rust and yucks never ever make a halo halo or palamig from those they are intended for food handling and preservation.
In industrial application just like those in plastic moulding machines, engine block cooling and many more, they call it process cooling.
Juddin said they makes ice to cool the Trinoma Mall...actually they just cool the glycol and store that chilled glycol in a storage tank
so they have a supercooled chilled water the next day...they save power by simply recirculating that water for several minutes or hours without a chiller the next morning.
